RD&I – Research, Development and Innovation

Investing in research, development and innovation is essential to boost decarbonization and the development of renewable energy, which makes the scientific projects promoted by ANP’s (the Regulatory Agency in Brazil) RD&I clause essential to the progress of the energy sector.

The RD&I clause, as it is known, states that companies producing oil and natural gas must invest part of their gross revenue in projects in the areas of exploration and development, offshore engineering, low carbon, digitization and Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE).

CNPC Brasil closely monitors the progress of each of its projects, fostering efficient collaborations and new opportunities. We invest in scientific research in a wide range of topics, such as carbon capture technologies, the study of multiscale data to set better methods for predicting oil and gas accumulation, reducing exploratory risk through the integration of geological, geophysical and geochemical information and oceanography and application of technologies for direct detection of hydrocarbons, artificial intelligence for flow measurement, monitoring of production and detection of abnormal events, enhanced oil recovery, storage and distribution of hydrogen, among others.

Such initiatives not only raise resources, but also build long-lasting partnerships. The PRH Program (Human Resources Training Program for the Oil, Natural Gas and Biofuels Sector) in which CNPC Brasil has invested, enables Brazilian technological development and training of specialized staff, who is ready to meet the needs of the market, which are essential aspects of an efficient and responsible energy transition.

HISEP® – 2023 ANP Award for Technological Innovation in the Subsea Technology Category

HISEP® (High Pressure Separator) is a state-of-the-art technology created with RD&I resources from the Libra Consortium, of which CNPC Brasil is a partner. Patented by Petrobras, it allows the separation of oil and carbon dioxide while still at the bottom of the sea, which reduces environmental impact and production costs and guarantees greater safety for platform operators.

Its immense transformative potential earned the Libra Consortium (Petrobras, Total, Shell, CNPC Brasil and CNOOC) the ANP Technological Innovation Award in the Subsea Technology Category in 2023.

NAVE – Investing in Brazilian Companies and Creating Solutions

Officially launched during ROG.e (Rio Oil, Gas and Energy, the biggest event of the industry in South America) in 2024, NAVE is an ANP program aimed at Brazilian startups whose projects will seek new solutions to the challenges faced by the oil and gas sector. It is a way to connect entrepreneurs and large companies through a common interest – overcoming obstacles in essential areas such as energy storage, energy security, alternative sources, environmental protection, among others.

CNPC Brasil is proud to be one of the eight energy companies participating in the first edition of a crucial program for the future of Brazilian energy, as it encourages the creation of technologies that can speed up decarbonization and the evolution of energy production in the country.
